Our recruiting is done in-house with the selection process made by the present members of the squad, based on whom they would like to see join the team if an opening exists.

It requires a great deal of practice and dedication to be be part of the team; however, we're continuously open for new candidates to tryout. Each current pilot, regardless of position is a knowledgeable team player, possessing precision flying skills. We require all our pilots to master the fundamental techniques and standard operating procedures, commonly referred to as SOPs. Talent, individual skill level and progression varies within the team, as well as during recruiting, although the end results we strive for are the same. To accomplish this, every team member has to learn large amounts of information and then put it to use during each performance. This includes motor skills, communications and specific formation techniques used during maneuvers. While most of our pilots are capable of flying any position within the formation, each position is unique and requires special attention by the pilot selected for the job. Therefore we recommend that you study to be well rounded in all positions and know the SOPs from cover to cover, but focus your stick and rudder flying towards one or two specific positions on the team.

To be considered, you have to be able to demonstrate flying formation off the Boss' wing. Don't worry! We don't look for show standards quite yet, but a solid foundation of basic formation flying skill is necessary. Once onboard, you'll go through training lessons and learn to fly the maneuvers while working towards show standards. Noteworthy is that the team is never fully trained, which means we continuously practice, even throughout each season as we look for areas to improve. In order to appear symmetrical and fused together in formation, each pilot flies what is known as a sight picture. These pictures are also referred to as "flying paint" and essentially illustrate how to line up the leader's (or preceding) aircraft visually in order to be in the correct position and spacing. The leader then becomes the new horizon as each pilot's sole role is to maintain this precise sight picture, no matter what, while using proper control inputs. Additionally, our entire performance is based on exact timing between the Diamond and the Solos which requires exceptional situational awareness by all our pilots.

While recruiting we also look for people with a good attitude who can contribute, be a team player and able to demonstrate professionalism, dedication as well as flying aptitude. Personality is as important as anything else and weighs heavily into the selection process of new team members. For answers to many common questions visit our FAQs and browse our forums.
